Zach Smith has been involved in marching and concert percussion for eight years. Zach started off playing cymbals in the sixth grade, moving to the snare drum in the seventh grade. In the eighth grade he auditioned for the snareline at Spirit Drum and Bugle Corps out of Atlanta Georgia to get his feet wet in the drum corps activity. Although he did not make the line that year he was invited by Sean Womack, one of the instructors with Spirit at the time, to join his indoor percussion group. Zach marched vibes with Doublestop Indoor Percussion in 2010 and snare drum in 2011, 2012, and 2013.
In the ninth grade Zach auditioned with Drum Corps International's open class corps Music City where he marched snare drum with Music City in 2011, 2013, and 2014. Zach played snare his freshman and sophmore years in high school, bass drum his junior year, and was drum major his senior year. In 2015 Zach marched with the World Championship WGI Indoor Percussion group Music City Mystique and will be spending his fouth year with Music City Drum and Bugle Corps as the Percussion Section Leader for the corps.
Zach is currently the percussion instructor at Mortimer Jordan High School and North Jefferson Middle School and has several individual students taking private lessons. Zach is certified through the Alabama Board of Education to teach at any school in Jefferson County.
